Many drivers don't realize how important it is to update their car insurance policy on a regular basis. A good rule of thumb is to contact your car insurance agent if any of the following events occur:
- Buying or selling a car
- When a new driver enters your home
- If you get married or divorced
- If you pay off your car loan
- When you move
Buying or Selling a Car: Anytime you come into ownership of a new vehicle or sell a vehicle currently listed on your auto insurance policy, you should contact your car insurance agent about updating your policy. For a new vehicle to be covered, it must be listed on your policy so it's wise to contact your car insurance company before you drive the vehicle off the lot. Likewise, once you sell a vehicle and the title has officially been transferred to another owner, you should contact your auto insurance company about removing that vehicle from your policy to avoid paying for unnecessary coverage.
New Driver: Every licensed driver in your home needs to be added to your auto insurance policy to protect you in the event that they are involved in an accident while operating your car. Has your teenager recently earned their driver's license? Do you have a new roommate moving in that has access to your vehicle and keys? Contact your auto insurance agent and let them know whenever a new driver moves into your home.
Marriage or Divorce: If you recently have gotten married or divorced, you should contact your car insurance agent about updating your policy. When you get married you and your spouse can be listed on the same policy which should save you some money as opposed to paying for separate policies. If you get divorced, you should ask your auto insurance agent to remove your ex-spouse and any related vehicles from your policy so that you are not paying for coverage you don't need.
Paying off your car: Oftentimes when you finance a vehicle you are required to carry specific minimum coverage amounts on the financed or leased vehicle. After you pay off your car, contact your auto insurance agent to find out if the coverage amount you are paying for is still accurate for your insurance needs. You may be able to change your deductibles or coverage types and save some money.
If you Move: If you change your place of residence you should contact your car insurance company immediately in order to update your garaging and mailing address.
