Though the Sunshine State has not been affected by a major hurricane this year thus far, Florida auto insurance company AGIC Insurance is reminding state residents that thunderstorms can bring treacherous conditions as well.

Vincent Payne, who heads AGIC, is urging Floridians to practice common sense before driving and to check weather reports if the skies look ominous.

"Before you drive in bad weather, make sure you check the local news to decide if you really need to go out," said Payne. "You do not want to damage your car or hurt yourself in these types of storms and driving conditions."

He added that hurricane season is not over either, so motorists should make sure their vehicles are in good working order should they need to evacuate their residence due to an impending storm.

Keeping a vehicle properly maintained can help motorists avoid breaking down on the road, which could lead to an accident. Scheduling a tune-up with a licensed auto mechanic can help drivers ensure their car is in top shape.
