According to the National Crime Insurance Bureau's "Hot Wheels" report for 2010, the 1990 full-size Chevrolet pickup topped the list of most-stolen vehicles in West Virginia last year.
The report shows other older vehicles, including the 1994 Ford Ranger, 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier, 1997 Chevrolet S-10 pickup and 1999 Dodge Ram, were also high-theft vehicles last year.
West Virginia State Police Sergeant Mike Lynch told the Charleston Daily Mail older models are more frequently targeted for theft because they generally don't have security systems.
"It's no longer a simple matter of hotwiring a vehicle," Lynch told the paper. "Even motorcycles like Harley-Davidsons have a theft security system now built into their ignitions. That seems to be the way manufacturers are going, and the auto insurance industry is helping to promote that because they have fewer claims they have to hand out."
In 2009, the NICB's "Hot Wheels" report indicated the Ford F-150, another pickup truck, was the most-stolen car in the state. Pickup truck owners may want to check out car insurance quotes to get the best policy possible.
