Four new cars designated top safety picks

According to a recent report released by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), four new models have been named top safety picks for 2013.

In order to determine safety levels, the IIHS conducts strenuous examinations of all new models, including testing frontal, side, rollover and rear impact reactions. The cars that are deemed the safest are designated Top Safety Picks, a high honor that is touted by manufacturers.

This year, the four safest models, released in a quick report preceding the full list of safety picks, were the new version of the Lexus ES, a midsize luxury car, the Hyundai Santa Fe, a midsize SUV, and two smaller vehicles, the Subaru XV Crosstrek and the Dodge Dart.

The redesigned Lexus ES jumps into the elite four after receiving only marginal ratings in the previous year, debuting a new V6 gasoline-powered engine on the ES 350 and a hybrid car in the ES 300h. The Santa Fe was also redesigned this year, though its predecessor was also one of the safest picks of 2012.

Drivers have more than just safe driving to entice them to the top safety picks: insurance providers often offer discounted auto insurance rates to consumers who select cars that have certain safety features and are deemed safe by the IIHS.
