Illinois city has high number of uninsured drivers

An alderman with the Rockford, Illinois, City Council recently expressed to the local NBC affiliate news station WREX that the number of drivers living in the city without auto insurance is "astounding."

According to the station, Rockford police recently discovered through internal research that one in five drivers pulled over for a traffic citation in recent months didn't have car insurance.

Rockford Alderman Pat Curran told the station he is unsure why local police typically let uninsured motorists drive away instead of impounding their vehicles after traffic violations.

"I don't know if this bothers anybody, but it absolutely astounds me that police can stop somebody, write them a citation for not having insurance, which is against the law, and then they drive away," Curran told the news station. "It's time for us to address that issue in earnest."

Auto insurance rates may increase in Illinois if more drivers skip on insurance. A report released in April by the Insurance Research Council shows 15 percent of Illinois drivers were uninsured in 2009.
