Jose A. and Jose D. Uribe of Union City, New Jersey, were charged this week with fraud in connection with the sale of allegedly false auto insurance policies, according to a report in the Jersey Journal.
Hudson County prosecutor Edward DeFazio alleges that the Uribe brothers - via their company, Inter-America Insurance Agency - accepted insurance fees and fleet premiums from both private motorists and fleet owners, and providing them with bogus policy documents and numbers in return, which did not provide any liability protection, the newspaper said.
The Journal also said that victims who had signed up for the policies registered their cars normally, only to discover when they tried to file a claim that no such policy had been issued. Officials told the paper that the Uribe brothers actually paid several claims in order to avoid being detected.
Those officials also urged New Jersey residents who had purchased a policy they thought might be connected with the Uribe brothers to contact their carrier and verify that their coverage is genuine.
