Dear Jason,

It is quite common when purchasing an older home that home buyers are concerned about problems because of old systems in the home. You want to update anything that has the potential to damage or destroy your home such as electrical, plumbing etc.  Updating these systems makes you less likely to file an insurance claim.  Remember, insurance is there to protect your home in the event of a disaster or peril where your home or its contents are partially or completely destroyed. (See our Home Tips)
To protect the systems in your home such as your air conditioning unit, hot water heater, furnace, etc., it is a good idea to purchase a home warranty.  A home warranty covers the types of systems above whereas a home insurance policy would only cover these systems in the event they were damaged by a covered peril. For example, if your hot water heater shorted and caused an electrical fire, the damages to your home caused by the electrical fire would most likely be covered by your home insurance (as long as there was no negligence on your part).  However, if your water heater simply stopped working and needed to be replaced, you could probably use your home warranty to replace it. Home Insurance would not cover that type of claim. Read about Standard Home Insurance.

Sometimes the seller will purchase the home warranty for the buyer especially when a home inspector has deemed some of the systems in the home as functioning but in need of replacement soon.

Suzie,

Standard home insurance does typically cover your children living away from home if they are full time college students and part of your household.  Limitations vary, however, and you might want to contact your home insurance agent to find out the specifics of your policy. For example, some insurance companies only cover full-time students who live in dorms while students who live off campus are not covered.  Talk to your home insurance company to find out the specifics on your policy.

Thanks,

Jeff,

Typically bicycles are covered under a standard home insurance policy.  Although, most policies will have a limit on the replacement costs they will provide- usually around $250.  As always check with your home insurance agent to find out specifics. Be sure to read our Tips on Prevent Bike Theft.

In the future, always know the amount of coverage you have for your bike and compare that to the value.  Do you need additional coverage for this personal property?  You might want to schedule an endorsement on your policy to provide more coverage in the event that your bicycle is ever stolen again.  Contact your home insurance agent for more information on additional coverage.

Thanks, HomeInsurance.com

Dear Lee,

Most standard home insurance policies have a limit on the amount they will cover for jewelry.  Typically this amount is only about $1,500.  You should contact your home insurance agent to find out what your limit is for jewelry under your policy.

If you feel that you need more coverage, we would recommend scheduling an endorsement on your policy to cover the jewelry.  This endorsement is just an extension of your regular coverage, that would protect your valuable jewelry up to the specified amount in the event of theft.  If you have more questions about what is covered under  a standard policy, read our article on Standard Home Insurance or Contact an Agent Today.

Lillian,

Sorry to hear about your recent misfortune.  Good news is- under most standard home insurance policys- sheds, garages and other detached structures on your property are covered against damage caused by wind/hail/fire. Typically, coverage for other structures is about 10% of your dwelling coverage. After you replace it, consider the replacement value of the garage.  If you feel that you may need more coverage for your garage in the event that this ever occurs again, talk to a home insurance agent about your options for extending this portion of your policy.
