Dear HomeInsurance, I am getting ready to adopt a dog from a local animal shelter but I have heard that some breeds might not be covered under my home insurance policy. What breeds are not covered? Sarah T., Brookdale N.J.

Dear Sarah,

Some specific dog breeds have been found to be more aggressive than others.  In a CDC (Center for Disease Control) 20 year study the following breeds were found to be the most aggressive: pit bulls, Rottweiler’s, German Shepherds, Husky’s, Malamutes, Dobermans, Chow Chows, Great Danes and Saint Bernard’s.  Depending on the home insurance company, liability coverage can sometimes be denied due to the ownership of one of these breeds.

Your best bet is to be well aware of the breed type of the dog you are considering for adoption and ask your home insurance company if that breed is acceptable under your policy. For more information on dogs and home insurance, visit our article about Reducing the Risk of Dog Bites which provides helpful information for owners of ALL breeds.

Good Luck with your new four-legged friend!
