My elderly neighbor slipped & fell on a bad step on our front stoop injuring her hip- she wants us to pay her medical bills- is this covered under our home insurance policy? Janet T. Brookhaven N.Y.

Janet,

Sorry to hear about the recent accident! Fortunately, most standard home insurance policies have coverage for Medical Payments- otherwise known as MedPay. If there is no lawsuit involved, your home insurance policy will typically cover the cost of medical payments for accidents that occur on your property- up to the limits in your policy. Be sure to call your home insurance agent to discuss the specific coverage in your policy.

Another good idea is to read our Home Insurance Tips for ideas on how to keep your home safe and reduce the risk of accidents. While accidents can happen at any time, there are plenty of things you can do to prevent injuries on your property.
