We have come up with yet another home insurance tool for our homeowners.  Our Home Insurance Home Inventory is a thorough, comprehensive checklist that you can download for FREE and use to compile your home inventory.

Why do a home inventory?
Too often, homeowners will not complete a home inventory.  In the case of a disaster, or loss of your home, your insurance company will ask you to come up with a list of everything you owned.  I’m sure you can imagine how difficult it is to catalogue everything you owned after it is gone.  This is why we encourage all of our customers to complete a home inventory.  It’s just one more layer of protection we like to offer our customers.

Helpful Tips
When completing a home inventory, it is always a good idea to:

1) Include photos & receipts
2) Keep your inventory in a safe place outside of your home
3) Update it on a regular basis
4) Include serial numbers

Mychele,

In regards to your question below: A standard homeowners policy would not provide coverage for a situation like this because it is not one of the perils listed in a standard policy. However, it is always a good idea to read your individual home insurance policy to determine your individual coverages and endorsements. You may also want to contact the company you are insured with for any additional questions.

Thank you for visiting HomeInsurance.com.

Earlier this week homeowners around the country had to look no further than the front page of every newspaper to be reminded of the importance of flood insurance

On Tuesday, The Mississippi River swelled and burst through the levee that protected the town of Gulfport Illinois… the damage was devastating.

The flood waters filled the town with about 10 feet of water- ruining homes and businesses.  In the middle of this disaster homeowners and business owners alike came to a disheartening realization: most of them were without flood insurance.

In 1999, local officials in Gulfport, Mississippi assured local residents that the levee was strong enough to withstand even the most treacherous flood.  FEMA agreed with town officials causing many home insurance holders to drop their flood insurance- or never apply for it at all. A mistake they will regret for a lifetime.

After the flood waters began to recede in Gulfport a gruesome number surfaced: Twenty-eight.  The total number of property owners who were insured against the damage.

Too often homeowners who do not live in a coastal city- who are not required by their lender to obtain flood insurance- will never purchase it.  Gulfport Illinois is a grim reminder that while your home might not be in a “flood plain”, all homes are in a flood zone- and are at risk of being flooded.

It’s Important to Know…

Standard home insurance does not cover damage caused by a flood.  Separate flood policies are available and will protect homeowners’ in the event of flood damage. If you would like more information visit our article on Flood Insurance. Or, contact a home insurance agent today to see what type of flood insurance is available for you.

At HomeInsurance.com, it is our top priority to find our customers the best home insurance available. Contact us today to see how we can help protect you, your home and your family.

Beth,

As always, you should double check your insurance policy for specific information about your coverage. However, I can tell you that most standard home insurance policies do provide coverage for other structures on your property such as detached garages, sheds, etc. This coverage is known as Coverage B or, simply enough, Other Structures coverage.

We get a lot of questions like these, which is why we have put together Home Insurance 101.  Feel free  to take a minute and flip through Home Insurance 101 for basic, yet comprehensive information about standard home insurancepolicies- see what they cover, and what they don’t.  There are a lot of common misconceptions among homeowners about what their home insurance actually DOES cover.  Many homeowners are under the impression that certain items are covered while they aren’t- and vice versa- so it’s good to brush up on your home insurance policy. If you have questions about how much coverage is enough coverage- please contact one our licensed agents.

Dear Donna,

Any time you make improvements to your home you should be sure to update your home insurance coverage to match the new value of your home. Check out our article about Upgrading your Home and Updating your Coverage to learn about the types of improvements that might require some insurance updating.

Estimating how much additional coverage you need is important, and you should talk to your home insurance agent to determine the added value to your home. If you are simply adding square footage, you might want to take a look at our home insurance calculator which helps you figure your replacement value based on the square footage and construction costs to rebuild your home.
