Mark,

Flood Insurance is available for renters.  It is called a Contents Only Policy- and insures your belongings and home’s contents in the event of a flood.  This policy is different from a standard homeowners flood policy as it doesn’t include coverage for structural damage- this makes  flood insurance very affordable for renters. Contact one of our Agents directly for more information on flood insurance by calling 1(877) 50-MyHome.

Sydah,

Yes, there is a coverage limit on every home insurance policy for each type of coverage. To determine your exact limits, you will need to contact your home insurance agent or refer to your specific policy. However, typically a standard home insurance policy will provide $100,000 worth of liability coverage for each occurrence. If you feel that you need more coverage, talk to a home insurance agent about increasing your liability insurance coverages. Or, read more about liability insurance here.

Thanks, Your Agent@HomeInsurance.com

Hello,

While you are not required to increase your home insurance coverage, many homeowners do choose to increase the liability portion of their policy after installing a pool.  Because there are so many pool related injuries and deaths each year, many homeowners want to adequately insure themselves against these types of lawsuits.

One requirement that you do face, however, is that you must have a fence and a gate around your pool. You should check your local building codes to ensure that your pool is installed correctly and up to the proper standards.

I would recommend contacting your home insurance agent and discussing your specific policy with them so that you can decide together what your limits of liability should be.

Thanks! Your Agent@HomeInsurance.com

Joyce,

Under most standard home insurance policies, there is  specific coverage Other Structures  on your property. This type of coverage protects the other buildings on your property such as detached garages and sheds. Learn more about visiting our web page Other Structures Coverage (Coverage B) and read an outline on everything covered and not covered under this specific part of your policy.

For an overview of everything that is covered under your home insurance policy, take a look at  Home Insurance 101- our complete description of a standard policy and standard coverages.

But remember, all policies can be different and for your specific coverages and limitations please contact your home insurance agent.

Jasmyn,

This one is tricky- While your policy will not claim to cover hurricane damage, most standard home insurance will cover the damages that hurricane force wind, hail and lightening causes. See, your policy covers damage caused by the specific peril (wind, hail, lightening) not by a specific storm system. So yes, while damages caused to your home during a hurricane will most likely be covered under a standard policy, you will find this coverage under the wind and hail portion of your policy.

For more information about standard home insurance take a look at this article we posted on our website a few months ago: Home Insurance 101.  It completely outlines what specifically is covered and not covered under a basic policy.

Mr Pascarello,

Under a standard home insurance policy, your home is protected against losses due to theft. But as I always say, make sure to check your specific policy with your home insurance agent as all policies can be different.

Also keep in mind that there are limitations as to what is covered and how much is covered.  For example, typically jewelry limitations are placed around $1500 unless you have a separate endorsement for specific pieces.  If you find that your jewelry values over $1500 you should talk to your home insurance agent about scheduling some of your valuable items on your policy.

A good way to ensure that you receive all of the coverage you need is to compile a home inventory where you catalogue all of your belongings. In the event of a theft, this home inventory will help you prove ownership of your belongings.
