College bound students become victims of theft

Filed Under (Home Insurance) by Editor

The Vice President of Product Management for Travelers Insurance Company reported that the most commonly stolen items on college campus’ are high tech gadgets such as laptops, iPods and cellphones.  As students are heading back to school this month, they should be sure to safeguard these items and keep them locked up and stored away from potential thieves.

Another safety measure includes purchasing renters insurance. While a homeowner policy will most likely be in effect in the landlord’s name, a rental policy would protect the student’s belongings as it provides contents insurance. High tech gadgets that are becoming popular targets for theft would be covered under a renters insurance policy making these items eligible for replacement in the event of theft or loss.

Some common sense tips for college students that sometimes get overlooked:

  • Never leave valuable items in your car even when it’s locked up in a parking lot
  • Lock your apartment/dorm room when you or your roommates are not home
  • Keep your valuable items stowed away somewhere hidden in your room when not in use- maybe even consider purchasing a small safe/lock box
  • If going home for a weekend or overnight trip, don’t leave your valuables  exposed in your apartment- always lock them up or take them with you
