Tropical Update: Hurricane Ike threatens Texas

Filed Under (Weather Updates) by Editor

As of  7 a.m. Thursday morning, the National Weather Service is reporting that Hurriance Ike is located in the Gulf of Mexico with winds sustained around 100 mp.h. and heading straight for the Texas coast.  Ike is predicted to become a major hurricane either today or Friday and might be as strong as a Category 4 on the Saffron-Simpson scale before making landfall early Saturday morning. (A Category 4 storm can pack winds of at least 131 m.ph.)

Homeowners on the Texas coast should be paying close attention to evacuation orders.  Thousands of homeowners  have already announced mandatory or voluntary evacuations. Weak and critically ill patients in coastal hospitals are being transported by bus to San Antonio, about 190 miles from Houston. Residents seeking more information about evacuation routes should check out the Texas Hurricane Evacutation Routes (PDF).
