Does my homeowners policy cover my clothing and other belongings if they are lost in a fire? –Hammond K.

Filed Under (Home Insurance Q&A) by Home Agent

Hammond,

While all homeowners policies are different, most standard home insurance policies include Contents Coverage, or Coverage C which provides coverage for your belongings and home contents including clothing.

Typically, a standard home insurance policy will provide 50-70% of the dwelling coverage for contents coverage.  So, for example, if your dwelling coverage was $200,000, then you would most likely have $100,00 to $140,000 worth of contents coverage.

There are limitations, however, to the amount of coverage provided for each item.  For example, a jewelry limitation may state that your policy only covers jewelry for each loss up to $1500.  Furs, collectible items and artwork may also have limitations. Be sure to ask your agent about any special items that you would like to insure.  If you find that you need additional coverage, you may want to schedule an endorsement on your policy which will provide extra coverage for particular items.

Thanks,
