It was heartwarming to read an article this morning about this California based gas company who is reaching out to their customers in need this holiday season.
Southern California Gas Company (”The Gas Company”) provides a free yearly home winterizing service for low-income households in order to help them conserve energy and save on their heating bills. The service includes repairing or replacing the homeowners’ natural gas furnaces (free of charge!) and other services such as caulking, weather stripping doors and attic insulation.
Eligible customers who take advantage of the program can also qualify for a 20-percent discount on their natural gas bill through the California Alternate Rates for Energy program.
But this program is nothing new for the Gas Company. They have weatherized over 500,000 limited-income homes since the program’s inception in 1983.
Don’t Qualify for a Low-Income Discount?
There are plenty of other ways to save on heating bills this winter. First, check out this interview we had with Maria Vargas (Spokesperson for the Energy Star program) last month. She offers great tips on saving energy this winter. (Also read up on Programmable Thermostats which can save you over $180 year on your energy bill)
Also, check out tips from the U.S. Department of Energy here.
