A severe weather alert was posted for the Midwest and the Northeast this weekend. Snow fall in these areas is going to be between 4 and 12 inches so homeowners should be taking the precautions necessary to stay safe during this time.
Here are a few of our tips to avoid the most common winter storm home insurance claims:
1- Before the storm, remove any dead tree branches that pose a threat to your home, a neighbors home, fences or sheds. Ice build-up can take down even live healthy branches so it’s a good idea to clear out the dead branches which are most likely to fall in a storm.
2- Shovel the snow off of any pathways and/or steps that lead to your front door or mailbox to reduce the chance of slippery falls.
3- If you plan on lighting a fire in your fireplace, make sure to take caution like keeping flammable objects/materials away from the open flame and never leaving the fire unattended.
4- If you are having company this weekend during the storm, be sure to de-ice your front steps which could pose a threat for friends/family coming or going in the snow.
5- In the event that you loose power and have to use candles and/or lanterns- make sure to practice caution and never leave an open flame unattended.
