How to Prevent Frozen Pipes

Filed Under (Home Improvement, Weather Updates) by Editor

On average, it is estimated that about 250,000 homes experience massive damage to their homes from the bursting of frozen pipes each winter. With the winter chill among us, it’s important to take measures to avoid frozen pipes as much as possible.

Did you know?  That a burst pipe can drench your home in up to 250 gallons of water/day?

Here are some tips for preventing frozen pipes in the winter:

  • Insulate pipes especially those that are in the basement, attic or other unheated areas of your home.
  • Purchase and apply heat tape or heat cables
  • Disconnect garden hoses before the cold hits
  • Seal any drafty windows or doors as well as gaps where wiring or vents enter the home.
  • If you go out of town, leave the thermostat set to at least 55 degrees and have a neighbor or friend check your home periodically while you’re gone
