The home I rent was robbed last night and my TV, stereo and some jewelry was stolen. Does my landlord’s home insurance policy cover this type of loss?
Your landlord’s home insurance policy is probably one of two types of homeowners policies. It is either a standard homeowners policy which includes coverage only for conents that your landlord owns or it is a Landlord Policy that provides dwelling and liability coverage but no coverage for contents.
As a renter your are responsible for securing your own renter’s insurance that protects your home’s contents in this type of situation. Renter’s insurance is different than standard homeowners insurance because it excludes coverage for damage to your home’s structure. It does, however, provide you with coverage for personal property (contents), loss of use (in the event the home is damaged by a covered peril and you need somewhere to live), liability and medical payments (med pay).

Oftentimes renter’s don’t realize the importance of having renter’s insurance until it is too late. Typically, depending on where you live, renter’s insurance is fairly affordable compared to standard homeowners insurance. According to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, the average renters policy in 2005 cost about $193/year ($16/month).
