Has it been awhile since you last reviewed your home insurance policy with a licensed agent? Many consumers report only talking to their agent when they first purchase their policy and if they have to file a claim.
“This is a major no-no if you want to ensure that you’re not paying too much for home insurance every month or to make sure you are still adequately insured”, said Bruce Berry Director of Sales at HomeInsurance.com.
Most home insurance professionals recommend a bi-annual review of your policy. Don’t just review your policy on your own- ask an insurance agent to give you a free review so you know you aren’t missing anything.
When reviewing your policy, use the following list of questions as a guide to your assessment:
1- Does my dwelling coverage still adequately cover the cost of rebuilding my home? (Sometimes upgrades to your home may increase your replacement value- make sure this all still adds up.)
2- Are my deductibles still appropriate for my financial situation?
3- Have I acquired any new expensive belongings (electronics, jewelry, etc.) that require me to schedule an endorsement on my policy? Have I sold or gotten rid of anything that I currently have an endorsement scheduled for?
4- Have there been any changes in my life that may make it beneficial to increase my liability coverage?
5- Have we added any structures (sheds, garages, etc.) to our property?
6- Are there any home insurance discounts that I now qualify for?
Because lifestyles and homes change often it is a good idea to review your policy twice a year and to make changes so that your policy accurately reflects your needs as a homeowner.
