Does home insurance typically cover damage caused by falling aircrafts or aircraft debris?
The recent tragic news of Flight 3407 which crashed into a Buffalo-area home last week has left many people mourning and some with a handful of questions. Families of the victims want to know how this crash occurred. The airline is investigating what the crew could have done, if anything, to prevent it. Many readers of our homeowners blog have been asking questions of their own…
Aside from the 48 passengers and crew, one resident of the home that the Turboprop plane collided with was killed- a 61 year old man. His wife and daughter were lucky enough to escape with their lives. Pictures of the crash scene are littering the Internet and the home is barely noticeable among the debris and ruins.
While plane crashes are rare when compared to the number of flights taking off every day, homeowners should be aware of their homeowners insurance coverage in the event their home is ever damaged by falling aircraft or even more common, aircraft debris.
Standard homeowners insurance does cover damage caused by collision with an aircraft and aircraft debris. If your home is damaged or destroyed in an aircraft related loss, you should be compensated up to the coverages defined in your policy. (As with all coverage questions like this, it is important to check with your home insurance company for the specifics of your policy.)
HomeInsurance.com extends their deepest sympathy to the friends and families of all victims of the Flight 3407 crash.
