HomeInsurance.com has recently revamped their home insurance calculator which has become a resource for homeowners around the country who are looking to calculate their dwelling coverage.
The new calculator offers average building costs for every U.S. city so that homeowners can make an accurate prediction as to how much dwelling coverage they need in order to protect their home in the event of a total loss.
Previously, homeowners were asked to estimate their dwelling coverage knowing only that the U.S. average is around $100/sq. ft. Now, homeowners can type in their zip code and get the specific building costs in their region.
The home insurance calculator is featured on HomeInsurance.com to show homeowners how dwelling coverage is calculated. Simply multiplying the construction cost to rebuild the home by the square footage of a home gives you the dwelling coverage amount that your insurance agent may recommend.
While many other types of coverage are included in a standard homeowners insurance policy, they are all determined as a percentage of the dwelling coverage. For example, personal property (or contents) coverage is typically calculated to be 50% of dwelling coverage. Meaning, a home with $200,000 worth of dwelling coverage would have about $50,000 worth of personal property coverage.
