What to know about homeowners insurance when your child goes to college

The most important thing to keep in mind about your homeowners insurance when your child goes to college is whether or not their possessions will be covered against loss.

Unfortunately, theft has become more common on college campus’ over the past few years with iPods, laptops and other electronics more frequently stolen. Because these items are not particularly inexpensive, it is important to find out what type of coverage your child has in the event something is stolen or ruined.

Typically, if your child lives in a dorm or other type of university housing, their possessions would be covered under your standard homeowners insurance policy. However, you should refer to your home insurance policy or call your home insurance agent for specifics on what is covered. Be sure to ask about coverage limitations as well.

If your child moves out of the campus housing and into a private apartment- they are typically no longer covered by your homeowners insurance policy.  (Again, check with your agent on this).  In this scenario, your child should consider purchasing renter’s insurance which will cover their possessions in the event their possessions are lost in a  covered peril.
