Top 5 Ways to Ensure a Safe Summer Party

Homeowners everywhere are cleaning up their yards, scrubbing down the outdoor grill and getting ready for some summer backyard fun.  As America’s #1 source for home insurance advice- we want to offer some tips on making your summer cookout claims free and worry free.

#1- Fireworks: According to the Center for Disease Control, 10,800 people in the U.S. were treated for fireworks related injuries in 2005.  While fireworks are beautiful-they are also dangerous- bottom line. You should leave the fireworks to a professional in order to prevent serious injury.

#2- Grill Safety: Whether your grill is propane or charcoal- you need to take serious precaution when cooking- especially if there are young people around. Keep your outdoor grill clean and empty the grease trap regularly to avoid unexpected flare ups. Also remember to always keep the top of the grill closed if your have to look away for even a minute- especially if there are children around. And most importantly, use extreme caution when using  ignitor fluid as it can cause huge flames that could catch you off guard.

#3- Food Safety: A homeowner in Indiana wrote to us last summer. After serving undercooked and contaminated pork at her barbecue she had 3 friends fall ill and she had to use her homeowners insurance medical payments coverage to pay for their medical bills. Avoid this by keeping all foods fresh before cooking and cooking thoroughly. A $20 meat thermometer can help completely avoid this issue.

#4- Swimming Safety: If you are lucky enough to have a swimming pool in the hot summer months you and your family are probably already aware of the safety precautions that you need to take to ensure safe swimming. However, when entertaining guests, be sure to explain any safety rules especially to children. Know how experienced your guest swimmers are and never leave young people unattended in your pool.

#5-Alcohol Safety: Many people associate summer cookouts with some alcohol consumption. As the homeowner, realize that you are responsible for any alcohol consumpti0on that occurs on your property and you can be held liable for any damages an intoxicated personcauses after leaving your property. Keep an eye out for intoxicated guests and never let anyone get behind the wheel who has been drinking. Don’t be afraid to cut off alcohol intake for anyone who seems like they may have had too much. And as always- never serve a minor.
