Homeowners Resources: Disaster and Claims Settlement Guides

In the midst of hurricane season and with the wildfires burning in California, many homeowners are thinking about the coverage they have on their home for major disasters.

And while certain disasters (like hurricanes, tornadoes, flash flooding, wildfires, etc) will strike very specific parts of the country- no part of the country is completely safe from a disaster occurrence. It’s not something that anyone particularly wants to have to think about- but it’s important to consider the possibility of disaster strike in your part of the country.

The best thing a homeowner can do is be prepared. Knowing how to prepare (if possible) for a disaster strike and how to recover your home and family is some of the best knowledge you can have.

Recently, HomeInsurance.com published a home insurance disaster guide to highlight some of the key pieces of information that homeowners around the country should know. Whether your area is affected by flooding, hail, or hurricanes, there is a disaster guide to help you prepare your home and family.

The Insurance Information Institute also recently published a brochure for homeowners, “Settling Claims After a Disaster”. The brochure is available online or in PDF format and outlines the important first steps that a homeowner should make if their home is damaged. It highlights important questions for your home insurance agent and adjuster and outlines important coverage options on a standard homeowners policy.

For more information about what your home insurance policy specifically covers, contact your homeowners insurance agent or refer to your home insurance policy.
