Can I get insurance after a DWI?

Filed Under (Auto Insurance Q&A, Customer Questions) by Editor

It depends. Usually you still can get auto insurance coverage after a DWI, however, your rates will most likely be 2 or 3 times what you were paying previously. Maybe even higher. Some insurance companies, however, may drop your coverage if you are convicted of a DWI. Since all licensed drivers are required to have some sort of insurance coverage, you may have to purchase an expensive policy while the points remain on your license.

Another factor to consider is whether or not you have other points on your license. A DWI offender who also has a recent speeding violation and an accident on their record might have a hard time finding coverage.

The good news is, if you have a clean driving record aside from your DWI, your insurance company will probably only charge you elevated rates for about 3 years from the date of your conviction.  In the meantime, focus on driving safely, avoiding accidents and certainly avoiding tickets and violations. Also, ask your auto insurance agent about other ways to cut down on your premium including increasing your deductible (if you can afford it!) and taking a safe driver class.
