4 Frugal Ways to Cut Costs at Home This Season

Filed Under (Personal Finance) by Editor

With the Holiday season peeking around the corner- it’s not surprising that you’re looking for ways to save a little extra money right now. Sometimes, the best ways to save money are right under your nose- in your own home. This September, follow these tips to save money on everything from your utility bills to your groceries.

#1   Spare the Air- This is a perfect time of year to save energy as outdoor temperatures are dwindling down on thermometers across the country. Turn off the A/C and open up those windows. You are not only cleaning up your indoor air quality but you can save up to $100 each month on energy bills when you don’t need to cool your home. And as the autumn air gets chillier, avoid turning on the heat as long as possible. Throw an extra blanket on the beds and invest in a pair of warm socks to hold you over as long as possible. You could save a few hundred dollars this season alone.

#2   What’s Your Policy?- It’s a good idea to review your insurance policies at least once a year, so why not now?  Oftentimes you or your agent may overlook some important savings or discounts that could be costing you. Are you bundling your home and auto insurance policies which can save you up to 20%? Have you reviewed your deductibles and coverages to ensure they still match up with your needs? Take a good luck at your savings and the possible insurance discounts you may be eligible for. Contact your insurance agent if you aren’t sure.

#3  Save Dough on Dough- Whether you are a family of six or dining solo, there are plenty of ways to save some cash when it comes to food costs. First rule? Cut down on eating out. The National Restaurant Association reports that 1 out of 5 meals consumed by Americans is done so in a commercial, restaurant setting. Given that a meal prepared in a restaurant typically costs about 3 times that of the same meal prepared in your kitchen, you can imagine how much money you could save in just one month of eating in.  Another great way to save on food is to plan your meals. Schedule your meals for the week and tailor your grocery lists to that schedule. You will see less food waste and probably gain a healthier way of eating.

#4  Entertainment- No matter what your age or lifestyle, everyone needs some play time now and then. However, how much are you spending each month to keep you and your family entertained? Instead of a trip to the mall on a rainy Saturday or going to the movie theatre every other Friday, find some fun and cheap alternatives right at home. Renting a movie cost $4 compared to $10-$12 ticket at the movie theatre. Instead of meeting friends at the local watering hole, invite them over for a game night and ask everyone to bring a snack or beverage. Find some free hobbies- like hiking or bike riding.  They provide exercise and an excellent sense of adventure while leaving the cash in your wallet.
