Hail is a form of precipitation that consists of balls or irregular lumps of ice. Hailstones can measure between 5 and 150 milliliters with the larger stones being generated mostly from large thunderstorms and tornadoes. Hail stones fall to the ground and cause quite a bit of damage to homes and automobiles.
At the very least, make sure your roof is in good shape. If you live in an area prone to hail and associated damage, you might want to consider upgrading your roofing material to an impact resistant material that meets local building code standards and requires minimal upkeep and maintenance.
If you are outdoors, seek indoor shelter immediately. Park your vehicle in a garage or other type of shelter. Cover windows with curtains or close blinds to reduce the impact of breaking glass.
Assess the damage to your property. It is typically a good idea after a major hail storm to have a licensed professional check your roof for damage. Also be sure to check your car for dents or broken glass. Report any damage immediately to your home insurance and /or car insurance agent.
Hail damage is typically covered under a standards homeowners’ insurance policy.
