More consumers have health insurance

According to a report released on Monday by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, more American consumers have health insurance than in 2010.

The report, based on data from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, shows that the percentage of consumers with health insurance has risen for the first time in four years. In 2010, the percentage of uninsured Americans rested at 16 percent, but in 2011, it sank to 15.1 percent. Although the decrease does not bring the levels down to the pre-recession rate of 14.5 percent recorded in 2007, it is still significant.

The New York Times is chalking the decline up to an increase in insured young adults due to a newly enacted provision of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The ACA now allows children of up to 26 years old to stay on their parents' insurance, which lets the 18 to 34 age bracket - the hardest-hit by the struggling economy - maintain inexpensive health insurance rates.

According to the report, the percentage of young adults under age 26 with health coverage increased by 5.2 percent while coverage of young adults aged 26 to 35 decreased by 0.7 percent.
