Poll: Many consumers feel protected by insurance, but not all fully understand it

According to a recent poll released by Northwestern Mutual, many Americans feel safe due to their life insurance coverage - but not all of them know the extent of their benefits.

The poll showed that two-thirds of American consumers feel "extremely secure" because of their life, auto, homeowners/renters, and/or health insurance, but some of them are missing the opportunity to use their life insurance to meet their financial goals.

According to the poll, most Americans purchased life insurance due to marriage, retirement planning, or the birth of a child, and take great comfort in knowing that the policy would protect their family in the event of an unexpected accident.

However, the poll also showed that many consumers did not factor important financial elements into their protection. In a poll of consumers without life insurance, only 15 percent considered education into their coverage and 11 percent included childcare. Approximately 30 percent were not sure what would need to be covered at all.

Since September is national Life Insurance Awareness Month, the LIFE Foundation is urging consumers to become educated on life insurance and its benefits. It is also asking that consumers without life insurance consider purchasing coverage in order to protect their family in the event of an accident.
