CA insurance commissioner urges residents to prepare for wildfire season

California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones recently gave a speech in Vista, California, urging North County residents to prepare for the onset of wildfire season in the fall.

Jones, who is the premier regulator of all homeowners insurance policies in the state, advised residents to check their insurance policies annually to ensure adequate coverage, take a detailed inventory of all property and possessions and calculate potential damage repair costs.

Jones cited the lack of adequate homeowners insurance coverage during and after the 2003 and 2007 fires in San Diego as reason to always be prepared. The California Emergency Management Agency states on its website that 56 percent of Presidential declared disasters in the state since 1950 were the result of wildfires.

CalEMA further urges residents to follow a few preparedness tips. State law, according to the website, requires flammable vegetation to be at least 100 feet away from every house, but the agency notes that some areas may have increased minimums. Additionally, the agency notes that homeowners should trim trees so that branches are at least six feet off the ground and 10 feet away from their chimneys.
