Insurance providers and seismologists in California recently voiced their worries regarding "the big one," or the earthquake of a magnitude 7 or higher that is expected to occur in the near future, according to Insurance Journal.
Although officials do not know when the earthquake will occur, the fact that an earthquake of that magnitude has not emanated from the San Andreas within the last 300 years leads many to believe that the fault is overdue for a large shift, notes the source.
Recently, residents of Southern California participated in an event called the Great California Shakeout in Los Angeles' Union Station, according to the Pasadena Star-News. The Shakeout, an event meant to teach residents the proper safety proceduresin the event of a serious earthquake, is now in its fifth year.
Homeowners interested in earthquake coverage to protect their homes may want to check their homeowners insurance policies, notes the California Earthquake Authority. Residents near the San Andreas - an area that includes most of the southern part of the state - should purchase an additional earthquake protection policy to protect their homes.
