Dog bites are unfortunately a somewhat frequent occurrence across the country. Data released by one home insurance company finds that they take place most often in California.
State Farm says that in 2010, there were 369 dog bite claims in California, resulting in payments of more than $11.2 million. Illinois, Ohio, and Texas were also ranked near the top, with at least 200 claims in each state.
On a nationwide basis, the company said that there were more than 3,500 home insurance claims related to dog bites in 2010, which resulted in payments of more than $90 million.
All too frequently, the victims of dog bites are kids, with the insurer saying that more than 60 percent of cases involve children. Older Americans and home service workers were also frequent victims.
Other data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention finds that roughly half of children have been bitten by a dog before they reach 12 years of age. Roughly 20 percent of dog bites are serious enough to require some sort of medical attention.
