This week, many home insurance companies and Colorado residents are marking the 10-year anniversary of the massive Hayman wildfire which hit the state in 2002.
The fire, which started outside of Denver on June 8, 2002, eventually became the largest wildfire ever in the state, according to the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America. Before it was eventually contained, the fire scorched nearly 140,000 acres and destroyed more than 100 properties.
The group notes that the Hayman fire marked a turning point in wildfire prevention, and drew officials and residents to work closer together to minimize damages. That need for preparation continues.
"From east to west, we face a very real threat from wildfires this summer and there is no time like the present to take the steps necessary to protect your family, home and business," says Kelly Campbell, PCI vice president.
As the anniversary approaches, firefighters in New Mexico are currently battling a wildfire which has persisted for roughly three weeks. The blaze in the Gila National Forest has burned more than 400 square miles and is the largest fire ever in New Mexico.
