Even though many people have home insurance coverage, agents say many Americans don't pay much attention to their policies.
Agents told the Indianapolis Star that because some people don't take the time to talk with an agent, they don't know that hazards such as floods or earthquakes, along with other issues, aren't covered by a standard policy.
"Most people don't realize that they're not covered for a stone falling out of their jewelry, or for water backing up into their basement or the main level of their home," Brian May of May Insurance and Financial Services Corp. told the paper.
Agents also told the Star that when shopping for home insurance rates, homeowners should review coverage levels and exclusions as well as the policies' price tags.
A recent survey by the consumer review website Angie's List found that almost 30 percent of people admitted it had been at least two years since they reviewed their home insurance policy with an agent.
