With winter flooding possible in Arizona, California and Nevada, the Federal Emergency Management Agency urged residents of those states to be prepared today in an announcement.

FEMA pointed out that most standard home insurance policies do not cover damage from flooding, and said at-risk homeowners should get coverage however they can.

The agency's region IX administrator, Nancy Ward, said residents have numerous ways to improve their chances of staying safe.

"Virtually every home and business owner faces some risk of flooding, which can stem from events as commonplace as broken sewer lines, slow-moving rainstorms, or even a new real estate development that alters drainage patterns around a property," she said. "Everyone should have a flood preparedness checklist, and for many people, having flood insurance can be as important as having an emergency supply kit and knowing where to go if they need to evacuate."

Heavy rainfall and a lack of vegetation on the ground in some areas due to wildfires could increase the risk of a destructive flood, according to FEMA.
