Firefighters are still working to determine the cause of a fire that tore through a Dell Rapids, South Dakota farmhouse this week, putting one resident out of his second home this year.
Jordan Schmidt, who lived in the home with his parents and sister, told KELO-TV that he had just moved back into the home with his parents after a flood destroyed his previous home.
"Was living in my house in Trent and then when the flood came through this fall my house got totaled. So, I moved back home with mom and dad and then this happened," Schmidt told the station. He added that the family thinks that its four pets also died in the fire.
Officials said that they hadn't been able to determine what may have caused the fire, but believe it started in the kitchen. The house may be a total loss, as fire crews needed to break down some of the walls to fight the blaze.
While the incident is still difficult to deal with, homeowners insurance should help the family get back on their feet after the holidays, as it will cover both damage to the home itself and any belongings that were destroyed.
