Thousands of dollars have been lost by business owners, homeowners and renters in Albany, Georgia, a report by NBC news affiliate WALB recently revealed.
Dale Hodges, an insurance agent in the area, told the station residential property owners and apartment tenants could see homeowners insurance and renters insurance premiums rise due to the spike in claims in the area.
"It can absolutely prevent people from obtaining a competitive rate because of losses," Hodges told the news station.
Realtor Jackie Dixon experienced damage to AC units at three of her properties recently. In one case, Dixon told the news source a commercial-sized unit was too large for thieves to take, but they still damaged the appliance. The cost to repair the AC will come to more than $6,000, according to Dixon.
Other areas of the state have had to deal with AC thefts this summer. According to the Forsyth Herald, thieves also damaged air conditioner units in Cumming earlier in August.
