A program from the South Carolina Department of Insurance provided 57 grants worth more than $248,000 to coastal homeowners looking to protect their properties from hurricane damage.
David Black, the department's director, said families living along the coast in Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester, Georgetown, Horry, Marion and Florence counties will use their grants to install new and improved roofs. With hurricane season drawing nearer, homeowners will need to protect their properties from water intrusion, high wind damage and a battery of other punishing effects.
"SC Safe Home is helping homeowners take proactive steps toward strengthening their homes and making them more resistant to the severe winds and damages caused by hurricanes. We know that hurricane season officially begins in June but it is never too early to begin to prepare," said Black.
Black added better roofing systems could also help homeowners save up to 24 percent on their home insurance.
The National Hurricane Center also advises families in hurricane-prone areas to develop an emergency plan, identifying a safe location where they can wait out a storm and ensuring their home insurance coverage is adequate ahead of time.
