As midwinter truly sets in, New Jersey Insurance Commissioner Sean Considine issued a statement saying consumers in his state should make sure to review their coverage for important details for the season.
"It is important for consumers to remember that winter activities, whether it is plowing snow, riding a snowmobile or simply traveling to a warmer climate, can have implications on insurance coverage," he said.
According to Considine, the typical damage covered by a home insurance policy in the state is that caused by falling trees or limbs, as well as collapses caused by the weight of snow or ice buildup on a house's roof. Leakage through snow or ice dams is also generally covered, but policyholders should be sure to double-check as soon as possible.
Home insurance policyholders also should bear that coverage in mind if they go skiing or snowboarding this winter, according to the commissioner. Most homeowners or renters policies will cover equipment for those pastimes if it is lost or stolen, though a deductible will apply and there is generally a limit on the coverage.
