Inspectors from the National Flood Insurance Program have now been dispatched to review a number of flood insurance claims in North Carolina related to Hurricane Irene after urging from state officials.

Flood coverage - which is not included in standard home insurance policies - is offered by the NFIP through insurance providers nationwide.

Last week, North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin and Bob Etheridge - a special advisor to the governor - wrote a letter to the NFIP. In it, they said residents have submitted a number of complaints about flood insurance claims, and wanted the damage they sustained to be reevaluated.

The added inspections, which will begin immediately, represent a widening of standard procedures for the NFIP, which generally sends insurance adjusters to examine a sampling of claims in a given area.

"Helping the families, businesses and farmers who suffered damage from Hurricane Irene is critically important," Governor Beverly Perdue said. "We appreciate our federal partners responding to our requests and the needs of our communities."

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has also set up a hotline for any residents with questions about their claims.
