The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) declared the week of October 7-13 to be Fire Protection Week as part of a national effort to raise fire safety awareness.
The theme of this year's Fire Protection Week is "Have 2 Ways Out," which the NFPA hopes will inspire consumers to create more than one escape route from their homes in the event of an emergency.
Joining in the effort, the Ohio branch of Nationwide Insurance has scheduled a demonstration of how dangerous cooking fires can be. According to the NFPA, cooking fires accounted for 42 percent of all fires reported in 2010. In order to showcase the danger of fires in the kitchen, Nationwide is planning to start a cooking fire and burn down a vacant residential home near its Lewis Center headquarters.
According to the Insurance Information Institute, consumers who take steps to make sure that their houses go above and beyond national safety codes may be eligible for reduced homeowners insurance rates. For example, if homeowners ensure that all smoke detectors in their home are state-of-the-art and up-to-date, as well as all electrical, plumbing and water systems, they may receive reduced rates for decreasing the risk to their providers.
