Homeowners insurance policyholders in North Carolina are making their voices heard regarding the recently proposed rate increases up for review in the state, according to the Gaston Gazette.
Citing storms that struck the state in recent years, the N.C. Rate Bureau put in a request to the North Carolina Department of Insurance, on behalf of the state's providers, for an average rate hike of 18 percent.
The rate increase proposals vary from county to county, according to the Gazette. Counties further inland, for example, are looking at proposed hikes of 9 to 14 percent. Coastal counties, on the other hand, could see rate jumps of up to 30 percent.
However, the NCDOI rarely supplies providers with the full increases that they request. In 2008, the last time that homeowners rates were scheduled for an increase, providers requested a jump of 19.5 percent and received just 4 percent.
