While the flood insurance program has been continually kept afloat in recent months by a series of extensions, Pennsylvania Senator Bob Casey is calling for a long-term fix for the National Flood Insurance Program.
Casey says a long-term reform bill would give security to residents nationwide who may be worried that they may not be able to buy coverage that protects them from a flood. Flood damage is not included as part of a standard home insurance policy.
"Congress should immediately pass a long term reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance Program so families across northeastern Pennsylvania know they’ll be protected in the case of another flood," Casey said.
He added that even though the state is nearly landlocked, many Pennsylvania residents faced severe flooding issues last year when the remnants of Hurricanes Irene and Lee dumped heavy rains on the state.
The flood insurance program has lapsed several times in the past, and nearly did so again in May. A two-month extension was signed into law on May 31 - the day before the NFIP was set to expire.
