There's not a whole lot of melting going on in snow-covered New England, but insurance representatives want Connecticut residents to prepare so they can avoid what happened to many of them last year.
According to local television station WTNH, some homeowners in Old Mystic got first-hand experience why they should have purchased flood insurance along with their homeowners insurance policy last year, as melting snow caused a small stream to flood and wreak havoc on locals' yards and homes.
So as to avoid similar floods from occurring this year, Donna Yother from Sava Insurance Group reminds residents that floods can hit anyone at any time and that insurance protection can be inexpensive.
"Everybody can get flood insurance," she told the station. "People think that's only if you're in a flood zone, and that's not true."
The station says depending on where people live, Connecticut flood insurance can cost as little as $300, but more for those living inside a flood zone.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency has updated its National Flood Insurance Program and in so doing has updated where communities' new flood zones are. Determining whether a community is in a flood zone can be done by looking at FEMA's flood insurance rate map on their website.
