A recent report says that estimated property insurance losses from Hurricane Irene were steepest in one New York county.
Suffolk County, located on the eastern section of Long Island, is projected to have sustained the most property damage as a result of Irene, according to analysis by Verisk Analytics. Dare County - located on the North Carolina shoreline - ranked second, with both areas sustaining more than $200 million in insured property damages.
A total of eight counties had property damage estimates of more than $100 million and three states - New Jersey, New York and North Carolina - had statewide damages of more than $500 million each.
Overall, 13 states and 191 counties across the East Coast were affected by the storm.
The late-August storm was one of the more costly natural disasters in recent memory, as more than three dozen deaths resulted from the first hurricane to strike the U.S. in three years. Modeling firm AIR Worldwide has estimated overall Irene-related losses for insurance companies could hit $6 billion.
