Among the top five cities with the highest likelihood of receiving damaging hailstones, three are located in Oklahoma a new report reveals.

CDS Business Mapping, a consulting firm based in Massachusetts, recently released its findings on what cities with populations exceeding 50,000 were most prone to hail. Amarillo, Texas, was considered to have the highest probability of receiving hail, followed by Witchita, Kansas and Tulsa, Oklahoma. Rounding out the top five was Oklahoma City and Midwest City, Oklahoma.

The list is based on CDS' RiskMeter Online Hail Model, which helps insurers assess the risk of damaging weather for any location in the contiguous U.S.

"In 2010 there were over 10,000 hail storms that caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in losses for insurers," said Daniel Munson, founder of RiskMeter Online. "Although hail losses are inevitable, RiskMeter makes it easy for underwriters to assess and price risk."

2011 has been an active year for environmental disasters on the whole, as throughout the country, homeowners insurance companies have experienced billions of dollars in claims.
