For Colorado residents forced out of their homes by wildfires which swept through the state in recent months, home insurance concerns have been paramount. Fortunately for them, the group Policyholders United has sent representatives to the state to assist, according to a report from the Boulder Camera.
Some policyholders don't understand there are limits to how much replacement coverage will actually provide in the event of a disaster, the Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association's Carole Walker told the newspaper.
"People need to understand that we are in a different era for insurance. To protect yourself, you need to realize what your limits are," she said.
Policyholders United told the Camera that 70 percent of homeowners surveyed in the wake of similar wildfires in Southern California were underinsured.
A recent report from television news station KMGH stated that nearly 170 homes were destroyed in the Fourmile Fire, and that 18 victims were having trouble getting what they said they were owed from their home insurance companies to cover smoke and fire damage.
