A blaze at a home in Grafton, Wisconsin, was exacerbated by high winds, causing significant property damage and leaving the structure a mangled wreck.
No one was home at the time but the family that owns the home on Lake Bluff Lane has had to consult their auto and home insurance company after the fire completely destroyed their home and wrecked a car that was parked in the garage. Fire officials told reporters that the flames started around 9:30 a.m. and were fueled by 30 mile per hour winds that also lifted smoke into nearby neighborhoods. Firefighters said the wind made it more difficult to fight the fire - four different departments were called in to help.
A neighbor told WTMJ Radio she thought she was seeing morning fog, when it fact it was smoke from the blaze being blown off the second story.
"We just stood in awe of how fast it went," neighbor Kate Lamkan told the station, who also attempted to alert the property's homeowners, believing they were home. "It just kicked in so fast."
Citing public property tax records, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported the 2.1-acre home was worth more than $580,000.
