Residents across parts of Nebraska are picking up fallen tree branches and filing home insurance claims after a winter storm left damage across the state.
The storm over the weekend dumped roughly a foot of snow in the city of Lincoln, littering the region with fallen limbs, the Lincoln Journal Star reports. Local tree companies say the aftermath of the storm has left them very busy.
"As people get out and about, they will notice more issues with their trees. It's a good thing for us but not for customers," Brannon Hall, a foreman for a tree service, told the paper. "Almost any yard with trees has some tree damage."
The Lincoln Electric System told the paper roughly 10,000 people lost electricity because of the storm, with many rural residents left in the dark. However, power has since been restored to nearly everyone.
Winter storms are a significant cause of property damage each year. The Insurance Information Institute says they trail only hurricanes and tornadoes in terms of annual catastrophe losses, with about $25 billion in insured losses from 1990 through 2009.
