Auto insurance rates explained

Despite being regularly mixed up, auto insurance rates and auto insurance quotes are different. State commissions set insurance rates for their residents, which serve as a baseline for drivers.

Auto insurance quotes are estimated costs of coverage tailored to individual policyholders. Insurance companies use state requirements as a starting point for quotes, and then consider additional factors about the driver and car. Many factors can affect your quote, including:

  • Claims history.
  • Driver history.
  • Vehicle make, model, and year.

What do all these numbers mean?

If you’ve recently looked at an auto insurance policy, you probably saw a series of numbers that looked something like this:

25/50/10

This isn’t a division equation — each number represents coverage your insurance provider offers in a specific scenario if you’re responsible for a wreck that results in injuries to others or property damage.

Bodily injury liability
The first number represents the bodily injury per person payment your provider will cover if you’re liable in an accident. The 25 in our example means your insurer will pay up to $25,000 for each person injured in the accident you caused.

The second number refers to the bodily injury per accident coverage, which is the maximum amount your insurer will pay for all the injuries you are liable for. In a 25/50 policy, your insurer will pay up to $25,000 for a single person’s injuries and up to $50,000 for the injuries of everyone you hurt.

Property damage liability
The third number indicates the amount covered in damage to property, including other vehicles. Your 25/50/10 policy will cover up to $10,000 in property damage.

The above chart shows your state’s minimums for bodily injury liability coverage. Each color represents a different level of required coverage.

No matter your state’s required coverage, you may want to consider more than the required limits. That’s because these numbers only indicate the maximum amount your insurance company will cover. You are personally responsible for paying anything above that amount.
